Sad News: John J. York Reveals the Heartbreaking Reason for General Hospital Break!
General Hospital’s John J. York Reveals the Reason for His Exit: ’This Isn’t Goodbye’
To put it mildly, we’d been concerned since John J. York announced that he’d be taking a hiatus from General Hospital and hoped that everything was OK. It seemed odd and worrisome timing, especially with the reveal that Cody is Mac’s surprise son in store. Well, on September 13, the actor took to Twitter to disclose what was up.
“I said I was going to give you an update on the reason I’m raking a little hiatus from General Hospital, and here it is,” he began. “So last December of ’22, I was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome, or MDS, and multiple smoldering myeloma, two blood and bone-marrow disorders.
“Over the past many months, I’ve had three bone-marrow biopsies, many chemo treatments — I have another one coming up in a couple of weeks,” he added, “and I’m closing in on a blood-stem-cell transplant.”

York just needs a viable donor, as do a whole lot of other folks. “So if it’s possible, and you would consider being a donor, joining [Be the Match’s] registry for not just me but thousands and thousands of people,” he encouraged us all to do so.
In closing, the General Hospital vet, who made his debut as Robert’s brother and Felicia’s endgame in 1991, expressed his gratitude. “I just wanna say thanks for all the support over the years. This isn’t goodbye, this is just ‘So long!’
“I’ll have to take a break for three, maybe four months, but I’ll be back,” he continued. “Someone once said that.” Mm-hmm. And we know who!
