A BBC continuity announcer was among the many EastEnders fans poking fun at last night’s ending of the soap.

One of the main storylines airing right now is Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty) and Zack Hudson (James Farrar) trying to adapt to life with young Britney.

Whitney and Zack met Britney when they travelled to Milton Keynes to see Bianca (Patsy Palmer).

After establishing Britney wasn’t living a good life as a result of her mum Keeley, Whitney became determined to do something about it.

During a confrontation with Keeley, Whit was stunned when the troubled mum said she would pay her to take Britney off her hands.

Back in Walford, Whitney has been spinning a story that Britney had been officially fostered – but her lie was exposed last night.

Believing Lauren (Jacqueline Jossa) to have betrayed her trust, Whitney tore into her, even going so far as to comment on her own family life in front of Peter Beale (Thomas Law) and their young son Louie.

Zack soon pulled Whitney back inside and revealed that Britney was the one who had spilled the secret, and the couple continued to argue over their different ideas for the future. When Whitney admitted that she would choose Britney over Zack any time, he stormed out, and soon met up with Lauren in Peggy’s.

While Whitney tried to pick up the pieces back at home, Zack and Lauren got chatting, eventually deciding to get dinner together.

Later, in the shadows of an alleyway, Zack and Lauren were sharing another kiss, though this time neither of them pulled away.

The latest instalment of the BBC One soap ended with Zack and Lauren kissing against a wall. While the focus was meant to be on this betrayal, fans couldn’t help notice their uneaten boxes of chips.

The BBC announcer – aka the voice you usually hear between shows on the channel – also picked up on this unusual doof doof and said: ‘Ah I can’t believe that, what a waste of chips!’.

On the social media platform X, other EastEnders audience members also expressed their thoughts.

‘Tonight’s doof doof is a box of chips omg’, this user wrote.

‘All I could think was, what a waste of chips. Ian would be fewmin!’, another said, and we couldn’t agree more!

This storyline will eventually lead to Whitney Dean’s exit from Walford, as Shona McGarty leaves the role after 16 years.

At the start of April, Shona finished filming.

At the end of her last day, she was greeted by a crowd of loyal fans bearing gifts and flowers for the actress – so many they could barely fit in her car!
