‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Why Laura Wright Was Born to Play Carly and How She Made the Character Her Own

‘General Hospital’ (GH) spoilers know GH has a goldmine with Laura Wright as Carly Spencer. A soap veteran, Wright expertly played Cassie Layne Winslow, Reva Shayne’s (Kim Zimmer) sister, on the now-defunct soap,  “Guiding Light.”

Oddly enough, Cynthia Watros, who plays Nina Reeves on GH, Carly’s nemesis, played Annie Dutton, Laura Wright’s mother on the soap.

Carly and Nina at odds

Talk about coincidences!! Laura Wright started on GH in 2005. She was the successor to the first, second, and third Carly. Specifically, and in order, they were Sarah Brown, Tamara Braun, and Jennifer Bransford.

On a recent State of Mind podcast, Maurice Benard, who plays Sonny Corinthos, replayed a 2022 interview with Laura Wright. Before replaying it, his introduction was about the four Carlys and how Wright is the perfect fit.

When Sarah Brown originated the character in 1996, she was a nasty, trashy homewrecker who came to Port Charles to seduce her mother, Bobbie Spencer’s (Jackie Zeman) husband, Tony Jones (Brad Maule), to get revenge on her for giving her up for adoption.

Tamara Braun, who played Carly from 2001 to 2005, gave the character some vulnerability. Braun is a talented actress who humanized Carly.

Jennifer Bransford was only on the show for six months. She clearly wasn’t suitable for the part. When Laura Wright came into the role of Carly Corinthos, she took the character to a whole new level.

To start with, Wright has incredible chemistry with the actors and actresses she shares the screen with. Starting, of course, with her onscreen ex-husband, Maurice Benard.

Carly and Sonny are getting married again

The two were so believable together as soulmates and partners in crime. Many fans are still hoping for a magical reconciliation for the super couple.

‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Why Laura Wright Is A “Tornado”

Benard calls Wright a “tornado.” He goes on to say,

“When she comes into the room, you better be on your toes, or she’s going to eat you up and spit you out. She’s one of the best actresses in daytime.”

Wright knows how to play Carly effortlessly with just the right cocktail of exuberance, strength, determination, and relatability. She’s a force of nature, a bad a**, and the most loyal, empathetic best friend all in one.

Take Wright’s recent scenes with Benard. Carly went to Sonny’s penthouse to talk to Sonny about their daughter, Donna Corinthos (Scarlett Spears), and what transpired is something that neither one of them expected.

General Hospital spoilers Donna has a question for Sonny GH

Carly told Sonny that she wouldn’t bring Donna to see him for a while, as she reasoned that it wasn’t good for her to be around his hostile demeanor.

Sonny was furious, and he became paranoid and irrational. Carly realized he wasn’t making any sense. That’s when Carly had her ah-ha moment, and Wright knocked it out of the park.

Carly realized that Sonny was acting as if he were off his bipolar medication. She raced into the bathroom to check, and Wright perfectly portrayed Carly as a mother whose ex-husband may be a danger to himself and his children.

Wright shines no matter who is playing the opposite of her. She took a role that could have been a one-trick pony and made it unforgettable, as she defines Carly Spencer beautifully.
